Report Petition

Over the years, Joe Quesada has made clear his distaste for Spider-Man being married to Mary Jane, but in recent interviews he is claiming that they are going to fix this "problem" by the end of the year. Presumably there is a divorce or another bridge incident on the horizon.

This petition is to let Mr. Quesada and Marvel know that fans enjoy Spider-Man being married to Mary Jane. They have already tried killing off MJ and an extended period of separation between the two. It didn't work. There is a history and relationship there that fans don't want to be thrown out. Mr. Quesada has apparently made the decision to destroy this 19 year marriage based on his own opinions of who Spider-Man should be.

The logic behind the decision is that younger readers cannot relate to an older, married Spider-Man. Having the marriage disolved is not going to make Spider-Man a high school or college student again. There have been too many stories and too much natural development of the character for that to happen. Marvel already publishes titles such as Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man (which is more appropriate for the "9 year olds" Quesada refers to)which feature a young, single Spider-Man. Why not allow the best of both Spider-Man worlds to continue in this way and allow readers to choose which Spider-Man they want to read?

Please Marvel, don't throw out something that fans love and have invested emotional interest in for years.

61 4 Jun 2007 - 20:50    Henry Zakay : I think that Spier-man and Mary Jane should stay together to show what love looks like. I have no problem with her dying, but I have a problem with what we'll be showing kids if they divorce.
60 7 Nov 2006 - 4:11    Ali Malik : I support this petition because I admire MJ as a character and love the dynamic she brings to the Spider-man story as a whole and as his wife
59 3 May 2006 - 6:00    Kayla Perko : I support this petition.
58 3 May 2006 - 0:50    Otto Octavius : because in thirty years when there is no Spider-Man anymore, I will finally win! Thank you to all the fans who want to do what I was never able to do....kill off Spider-Man! Huzzah!
57 2 May 2006 - 20:56    Matthew W. : Spider-Man's interaction with Mary Jane has added a level of humanity to him, something that makes him far more relatable and likable as a character. Taking this away would serve only a small portion of the demographic, and in the end, lose them as well. You can't just keep Spider-Man young and fit forever while every other hero ages and settles down. Your logic is circular.
56 2 May 2006 - 13:28    Rufus O'Reilly : because I am old guy who doesn't have much left. I know the marriage is bad for Spider-Man the character, but I don't care. See..comics should be written for me. The guy who has been reading for 20 years. Having Spider-Man be married is so important to me. God knows what will happen if other people join our secret comic book society.
55 2 May 2006 - 12:41    Devin Faux : ever since Straczynski took the helm, the Peter/Mary-Jane dynamic has been a huge part of why I follow Amazing Spider-Man. Take that away and you kill at least 50% of the reason I keep buying the comics. I'm HOPING that JMS won't write a breakup storyline for them, but there's always the possibility they'll get someone else to do so. For frak's sake, people, it's PETER AND MJ!
54 2 May 2006 - 11:28    Neil Risos : First you take Gwen Stacy away from him. Now you're taking away MJ? C'mon, gimme a break Joe! Don't you guys have anything better to do? Like make sure books come out on time?
53 2 May 2006 - 10:54    Dinesh Singh : Being married is what makes Spider-Man the better hero he has been in years. I love the marriage and if this is undone, I will definately not pick up the book in future
52 2 May 2006 - 6:49    Nate : the marraige is my favorite thing about the spider-man comics right now.
51 2 May 2006 - 4:52    Adam J. Piskel : I support this petition because I believe more emphasis needs to be made on working marriages in this day and age. Peter & MJ 4 Ever.
50 2 May 2006 - 4:25    R. Elliott Holloway III : Peter and Mary Jane need to stay married. This I proclaim.
49 2 May 2006 - 2:41    Brian Bove : becauase MJ is not just Peters girlfriend, shes his wife his true love. This ic comics not daytime tv there is no need for soap opera. There are other ways to make peters personal life more interesting.
48 2 May 2006 - 0:56    Alexis Santana : You do not need Peter to be single to get soap opera in the titles. There are other, less destructive ways of doing this.
47 1 May 2006 - 23:51    tyler b. : they need to say together if you dont like read ultimate spider-man
46 1 May 2006 - 23:21    Milek S. : Marvel can't threw away MJ. I grew up with Peter/MJ being married, always fancied that. Always will.
45 1 May 2006 - 23:07    Anders : 19 years can't be thrown away like that. Let them stay togheter.
44 1 May 2006 - 22:02    Bev Hisey : because Peter and MJ love each other. Do you want a depressed and devastated Spidey who would most likely end up in a rubber room after being wrenched away from the lady that keeps him sane? MJ stood by him when she thought he was a clone for goodness sake! They love each other. Right now, this is the only thing I am enjoying in the titles. Quit trying to shake up, rip up, retcon and ruin his life completely ! Geezaloo! I can't believe they would even CONSIDER doing this. You want an unmarried Spidey? Read Ultimate Spider-Man !
43 1 May 2006 - 21:29    David Gill : Peter has been married to MJ for almost twenty years now. It now IS the status quo, and it works for the character. I promise you, if you decide to retcon the marriage, it will be remembered alongside such other huge mistakes as the Clone Saga.
42 1 May 2006 - 20:54    Derrick C. Johnson : I support this position because Spider-Man being married to MJ is very much a part of the Spider-Man mythos to me. Aside from the fact that it would destroy 20 years of story and alienate many true spidey fans.
41 1 May 2006 - 20:52    Wilson Garrett : The marriage is an integral part of Peter's character now. Some of my favorite issues deal with the Peter/MJ marriage. It makes Spider-man unique as he is not only a struggling super hero, he is also a man concerned with his family. Peter is always a family oriented character. The death of a family member is why he is Spider-man, and he has always worked to protect his Aunt May. Peter is now part of his own family, and as a young adult I think he is just a strong a role model and as relatable as he has always been, and that instead of trying to fix Peter writers should focus on exploring the story possibilities that exist as part of his current status quo.
40 1 May 2006 - 20:52    Philip : they belong together. End of story.
39 1 May 2006 - 19:38    Matthew Walsh : I have read their marriage since I started reading comics. I would hate to see it go down the drain because Joe Q doesn't like it. At least give a better reason to do it. I wanna see them stay together.
38 1 May 2006 - 18:52    Brent C. : I support this petition because I happen to like the Peter and MJ marriage.Just because Joe Q. doesn't is no reason to break it apart.
37 1 May 2006 - 18:41    Mark A Jones : because Peter and MJ are one of the only enjoyable aspects of Spider man nowadays. Every story like The Other, Sins Past, Insect Queen, etc, do far more damage to the character of Spider Man than him being a married man.Take the blinkers off Joe. And stop letting the marketing guys tell you wahts what.
36 1 May 2006 - 18:27    Matt : Don't ruin everything you have spent the last 50 years building up...Marvel is going downhill big time...first House of M, then the new Spidey suit, and now this...?! WTF?!
35 1 May 2006 - 17:17    Aaron Sanders-Symeon : Peter and Mary Jane have been married for nearly 20 years. That says something. They've been together since even before I was reading comics. Destroying the best comic book marraige of all time will not only piss me off, but pretty much all the other Spider-Man fanboys out there too. For the love of God Joe Quesada! Don't do it! I've never had a problem with you Joe, but if you do anything to ruin Pete and MJ's marraige then I will have a problem with you.
34 1 May 2006 - 16:46    john Goodwin : I support this as a backup plan because I don't think Quesada is dumb enough to try to split them up again. He stated recently that you can't annul, divorce, or kill one of them off. So there you go. We're safe..
33 1 May 2006 - 13:07    Magnus Brors : I support this petition because Spider-man and Mary Jane are perfect for eachother. They weren´t forced together like other fictional couples. They just fitted together so greatly that Marvel got them married. Mr.Quesada, don´t destroy this marriage just because you don´t like it and realise that Spider-man in the 616 universe will never ever become a teenager again. He´s already a grown man and we all love him for it. If you want to fix Spider-man, get rid of this notion that he´s some spider-god´s chosen champion.
32 1 May 2006 - 12:09    David : I DON'T WANT THE HISTORY MESSED WITH! Ultimate Spidey is single for the next 40 years or forever if need be. 616 Spidey is married to MJ and I LIKE THAT! I buy every Spider-Man comic and I deserve to be heard!
31 1 May 2006 - 11:17    Kris M : because Pete and MJ have stuck together through thick and thin. They have a very real, relatable relationship that shouldn't be screwed with. Let it be Joe.
30 1 May 2006 - 8:21    Cassandra Hollingsworth : because I love MJ's personality. And the idea that a girl can fall for both the man and the mask at the same time.
29 1 May 2006 - 7:54    Mike M. : This really is one of the dumbest ideas ever. A dumb idea that has failed more than once before. Peter needs MJ and MJ needs Peter. Please Mr. Quesada, don't do this. Changing Spider-Man's costume is enough of a change for a while. Leave the character alone.
28 1 May 2006 - 7:22    Scott Myers : Peter and MJ have always been together. You can't change that. they're great together.
27 1 May 2006 - 6:54    arthur : I support because MJ is a great character who is only just showing her potential by intelligent creators. MJ is Peter's reason for fighting and surviving. He has something to loose. Nobody wants to read about a divorced or widowed Peter Parker and time travel/manipulationjust doesn't feel right in the Spidey verse. Erasing or undoing years of stories didn't work with the clone saga, it won't work again either.
26 1 May 2006 - 6:15    Eduardo : I support this petition because destroying te Spider marriage will do noting except dreg up stupid cliches of Spidey breaking dates because (fill villain's name) is attacking te city or robbing a bank or threatening Aunt May.
25 1 May 2006 - 6:04    al : I will drop any comic with Spider-man if anything happens to MJ. How can JOE Q say that it bad for peter to be married and status quo should never be changed. Did that stop the new powers for spider-man NOPE. Did it stop the ultimate loner spider-man from joining the Avengers HELL No. Even worse if the marriage with Storm and Black Panther where he hell did that come from middle of nowhere just to get HYPE from the BTE network
24 1 May 2006 - 5:42    Steffen : I've been a Marvel fan for nearly 30 years, with spidey being my favourite character. If Marvel is employing writers that are having difficulties with Petr's & MJ's marriage, then get better writers. It's that simple. I'm a big fan of a lot of the things Joe Q has done in the past to restore Marvel to its former glory, but this is not one of those things. Nobody has a problem with the marriage Joe. If new readers want to read about a young and single Spider-Man, isn't that what MArvel put out the "Ultimate" and "adventures" titles for?
23 1 May 2006 - 5:27    darkchild : Marvel already has Spider-Man single and young in Marvel Adventures and Ultimate Spider-Man. It jut does not make sense to me and many other people. Joe Q, please check fan reactions across all forums for their reactions; the idea, if it is going to separate, kill, or divorce MJ from Peter, is not sitting too well with the fans.
22 1 May 2006 - 5:08    Leonard Pace : Leave it as is... If I want to read single Peter Parker, Ultimate Spider-Man is good... I read both of em and love em! Leave it alone!
21 1 May 2006 - 5:01    brian middleton jr. : because peter and maryjanes marriage is a staple of peter parker, and yet another thing that defines him as a hero. his ability to balance his RESPONSIBILITY (a staple characteristic of spider-man) to mary jane with his responsibility to the rest of the world is one of his most admirable traits, and one of the things that attracted me to peter, even at the young age of 10. peter and mj's relationship is an example of something that everyone wants, even at the age, and i think it would be a tragedy if that was wrecked for any reason.
20 1 May 2006 - 5:01    Keith Solo : they are the definitive comic book relationship, no other relationship in marvel comcis or perhaps any comics has the love and emotion that those two have
19 1 May 2006 - 4:56    Matthew Middleton : I support this petition because Spidey deserves Mary Jane
18 1 May 2006 - 4:53    Houman Sadri : I've been a reader since way before the marriage, and I always saw it as a good thing. Peter and MJ have a believable, loving relationship and I think that's rare enough in comics that it should be celebrated and kept up.
17 1 May 2006 - 4:50    Adam Hoffman : Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson have been married since before I started reading Spider-Man regularly. I think they belong together. In fact, that seems to be the path that the movies are taking and past cartoon shows have taken. After all, doesn't a hero as put-upon as Spidey deserve to get the girl.
16 30 Apr 2006 - 10:38    Dominic Davies : becasue its just a really dumb idea.
15 30 Apr 2006 - 10:29    Maximilian : Spider-Man has earned the happiness he gets from his marriage. Getting rid of Mary Jane will only cause a regression for Spider-Man's character. You might win a few new fans but you risk losing everybody else.
